The new feature will add voice commands for OnStar emergency services to compatible Alexa devices like the Echo, Echo Dot, and Echo Show. The aim is to make it easy for people to get help as soon as possible when they need it, whether it’s a fire, medical emergency, or any other type of crisis. When enabled, simply saying “Alexa, call for help” will get you in touch with an OnStar Emergency Advisor. There are limitations, of course, such as having an available internet connection or working Alexa device, which could be affected in certain types of emergencies. In those instances, it would be best to try and call emergency services directly instead. Still, being able to call for help immediately, without having to run to or find a phone, could make a huge difference. “We hope this feature helps give families greater peace of mind throughout their day-to-day lives at home.” OnStar’s Guardian service will be available for some OnStar members soon—you’ll receive an email with more information if you’re selected. After that, a broader rollout to all compatible Alexa device users starting in 2022.
