Reddit user ar25nan recently discovered the addition in the new 6.1.15 Boot Camp update from Apple. This will allow MacBooks running Windows to make use of official support for Windows Precision Touchpad functions that include three and four-finger gestures. More common settings like single tap clicking and right-clicking via the lower right corner also are included. MacBook users who prefer to use Windows have long had to rely on third-party drivers (i.e. not officially from Microsoft) to provide similar functionality. Official device drivers should lessen the chance of potential conflicts between the trackpad hardware and the computer’s operating system, compared to third-party programs. While many other reddit users in ar25nan’s thread do claim that the unofficial drivers they’ve been using have worked fine so far, the official driver is an improvement according to AppleGuySL, who wrote, “It’s much better than the Mac precision touchpad driver from github…” The Verge noted that, according to a page on Apple’s support website, support for Windows Precision Touchpad is only available for Mac models using the Apple T2 security chip. A full list is available, but this basically means that any pre-2018 models will not support Windows Precision Touchpad functionality. Models such as the 13-inch and 15-inch 2018 MacBook Pro, the 13-inch Retina 2018 MacBook Air, and the 2018 Mac mini do use the T2 chip, and therefore are compatible. The update is available now, and these new settings can be found under the Accessibility options.
