How to Turn off Your PlayStation 4 Completely

Turning your PS4 off completely is recommended if you need to unplug your PS4 and move it elsewhere. When you do this, the console won’t be able to download updates, and all current game sessions will end.

How to Put Your PlayStation 4 in Rest Mode

PS4 owners can put their console in Rest Mode, meaning that the console can still receive and download updates even if it isn’t sending a signal to your television screen. Additionally, you can resume progress on your game sessions right where you left off after powering on your console from Rest Mode.

How to Turn off the PlayStation 4 Slim and Pro

To put your PS4 Slim or Pro in Rest Mode, or to turn it off entirely, follow the above instructions for the standard PS4. However, the power buttons are a bit different on each console.

Find the PS4 Slim’s Power Button

The PS4 Slim is noticeably smaller than its older, larger brother. As such, the buttons on the Slim model are also smaller, and therefore a bit harder to find. On your PS4 Slim, look to the left of the device’s disc slot. You will see an oblong-shaped power button, and to its right are tiny lights that serve as the power indicator.

Find the PS4 Pro’s Power Button

The PS4 Pro is a behemoth of a console, and its power and eject buttons are quite unconventional. The Pro has three “layers” to its design, as opposed to the two layers of the standard PS4 and the Slim. On the bottom of the middle layer is a long power button; notice that it is horizontal instead of vertical, like that of the standard PS4. Beneath it is a thin light strip that acts as the power indicator.
